Apprenticeships

Trailblazer apprenticeships have been specifically developed by employers to provide a comprehensive training programme preparing animal technologists for their roles as animal technologists.  They contain the skills, behaviours and knowledge required to be effective animal technologists.

The Animal Technologist Apprenticeship is designed for technicians who have completed their IAT Level 2 Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science & Technology and who have a genuine interest furthering the welfare of laboratory animals and good science.

About the Apprenticeship

This Apprenticeship offers employers a chance to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours of junior technicians in preparation for the demanding role as a Licensed Animal Technician.

The apprentice will develop the technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with the functional and personal skills, required to be an effective Personal Licence Holder. These are acquired through a combination of learning in the workplace, formal off the job training and the opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real work context.

During the apprenticeship the apprentice will get a lot of formative assessments helping them create a robust portfolio of their learning achievements and will get support in preparing for the End Point Assessment. They will also complete the relevant IAT qualification.

End Point Assessments

The End Point Assessment is the final assessment which determines if the apprentice has successfully completed the apprenticeship.  This is carried out by a specialist group of assessors. Employers can only spend the funds in their digital account or access government support to pay for approved assessment organisations that are listed on the Register of apprenticeship assessment organisations.

The End Point Assessment will consist of:

  • A synoptic interview (informed by a portfolio of evidence developed by the apprentice), reviewing the skills, knowledge and behaviours developed throughout the apprenticeship.

  • A work-based scenario based case study under examination conditions to assess applied skills, knowledge and behaviours in a contextually relevant way.
